This project presented significant challenges as over 6,600 tons of manufactured gas plant (MGP) impacted and non-hazardous soils were excavated and segregated on a project location that was confined to a small footprint, below an active roadway, where active on-site businesses remained fully operational.  The excavation proximity to the existing buildings required vibration monitoring and pre- and post-remedial structural surveys to be performed.

The remedial activities included soil excavation in which a slide rail shoring system was utilized for excavation depths that were up to 15’ below grade.  Management of impacted groundwater was required as the deep excavation proceeded below the groundwater table.  Due to the potential for nuisance odors and vapors from the MGP waste, odor and vapor suppression equipment was on-site for the duration of the excavation activities.  Following the removal of the soils, the nonhazardous material was sent to a local landfill, while the MGP waste was transported to a thermal desorption facility.

During the project, existing utilities (water, storm drainage, electric, and fiberoptic) were relocated and bypassed.  The site was backfilled with over 6,800 tons of imported material in one-foot lifts that were compacted to 95% density.  Site restoration activities included lawn, concrete sidewalks, granite curbs, asphalt roadways, and parking lots, were completed to preconstruction conditions.
